Fort Morgan, Alabama is a great year-around destination for a relaxing family vacation! It’s tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby Mobile and neighboring main resort areas of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Yet these areas are only a short drive or ferry ride away.

With its coastal location combined with breezes off Mobile Bay, year-round average daily temperatures here are perfect for outdoor activities. The area is home to a protected wildlife refuge that features gorgeous sand dunes, coastal marshes, and beaches – not to mention the amazing fishing! And don’t forget about incredible birdlife!

For educational experiences, the area has a rich history full of adventure. From historical military forts built during the civil war to serene natural parks that are home to rare plant species found no where else in the world, there is always something new to discover

Home to a big masonry fort which offers a tour and educational opportunities. This is a prime location for a hands-on history lesson. This military memorial commemorates important battles during the Civil War. Be sure to spend some time exploring the on-site museum with interesting exhibits about the history of the area as well as the site tours

Explore the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail – This unique trail is home to many bird species which migrate to the area, making it a great place for bird watching and photography. You’ll find the trail markers on highway 180.

Take a dolphin cruise throughout Bon Secour Bay – During the summer months, dolphin are extremely active in the area providing great opportunities for sightings.

Rent a boat and go tubing, boating or fishing – If you want to go fishing further offshore, consider charter a boat out of Orange Beach and fish for snapper, mahi, and/or grouper. Get all the information you need from permits to charters here.

Visit the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge and Interpretive Center – There are over 7000 acres and four designated hiking trails to explore here as well as an interpretive center. The Pine Beach Trail is one of my family’s favorite hikes as it end in a secluded stretch of beach. While there stop by the interpretive center to learn about the flora & fauna native to the area, including alligators and other interesting creatures.

Go kayaking – There are countless areas to launch your kayak and explore local waterways. One of our favorite areas to put in at at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. Be sure to pick up a trail map when you visit the center so you know where to go.

Enjoy a round of golf – Kiva Dunes is ranked one of the top public golf courses in Alabama per Golf Digest and Golf Advisor.

Take the Mobile Bay Ferry to Dauphin Island – This ferry runs daily from early morning to afternoon. It’s a beautiful ride across Mobile Bay and provides great views of Fort Morgan. The Dauphin Island ferry dock is located conveniently close to wonderful attractions like Fort Gaines and the Estuarium

Visit Fort Gaines – While you are on Dauphin Island, visit this historic fort which paid a significant role during the Civil war. It’s open for self-guided tours of the grounds, several buildings, and the cannons.

Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Estuarium – This is a great place for an educational experience. With over 19 miles of trails, you will learn about the coastal habitats and wildlife that call this area home. You can also visit their on-site sea turtle rehabilitation center and research library. For a deeper education experience, book a marine educator-led aquarium tour with your kids.

Karaoke and Dinner at Tacky Jacks – Tacky Jack’s, located next to Fort Morgan Marina, is a fun place for family-friendly entertainment and waterfront dining. A local favorite for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with live karaoke on Thursday and Saturday nights.

Visit the Gulf State Park – This large state park in Gulf Shores offers trails, a beach, fishing pier, and more! You can read more about my experience on the Back country Trail here. The beach here is one of the best beaches in Alabama. Be sure to stop by the lodge for a drink while you’re there – the sunset views from this hotel are absolutely gorgeous.

Visit Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve – Located in Fairhope, Weeks Bay has plenty of opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing here. A walk through the reserve’s wetlands and marsh along the well-maintained paths is highly recommended.

Visit the Coastal Art Center of Orange Beach – A beautiful art museum displaying area artists is a great stop is not far away from the beach. Check the class schedule for art classes, as well events in the glass blowing and clay studios.

Visit Mobile Alabama – This historic city is full of history dating back to the Civil War era. There are plenty of things to do in Mobile during your visit including visiting some great museums and restaurants. What guests say

Host was very responsive and gave lots of good advice. Had beach accessories, it is a walking distance and you have to cross the main stretch of Fort Morgan so, we drove instead of walking to the beach. Everything inside was super clean. We had all the everything that we needed for the whole trip. It is about a 20 minute drive into main gulf Shores make sure you pack goodbye everything you need so you don’t have to make multiple trips like we did lol also make sure to have your parking pass visible because we took ours down from the windshield because we were getting a glare and we had the windows down and we didn’t want to blow out and we got a violation. I guess it was a warning even though I filled out the HOA paperwork. We will be back because we had a wonderful time. Home felt so cozy and comfortable. New couches and chair were delivered the day before we got there. Thank you so much for our first amazing family vacation.

Jenny, August 2026

Our family had a wonderful stay! The house was absolutely adorable and the perfect size for our family. There was plenty of room for family dinners, board games, and relaxing together after long days at the beach. The beds were very comfortable, the bathrooms were spacious, and we never felt crowded. Excellent host and responded immediately anytime I had a question. The home was stocked with everything we needed, and as someone who is pretty picky about where we stay, I can honestly say we had zero issues. If you're staying here, I highly recommend checking out The Sassy Bass for ice, snacks, and lunch. We also rented a golf cart, which made getting around easy and added to the fun. Overall, this was a fantastic place to stay, and we would absolutely book again. Highly recommend!

Mary, July 2026

First and foremost, I would like to say our host martha was absolutely amazing. I had so many questions, and she answered every single one of them. Half the time I would end up answering my own questions, and she even joked that I always figured it out myself. She was patient, kind, and made us feel welcome from the beginning. I would recommend this place to anybody. Honestly, it felt like we never wanted to leave. This was the first time my family ever experienced the ocean, and I couldn’t imagine a better place to relax, kick back, and get away from everything. The house was beautiful, the drive to the ocean and entrance were perfect, and the whole experience felt peaceful and unforgettable. Her husband sean even rents out golf carts, and I definitely recommend speaking with him because he helped make our trip even more enjoyable. We will absolutely be returning. If there’s one thing I learned from this trip, it’s how to let go and let God.

Matthew, May 2026

Martha and her team were great hosts. There were a few hiccups as the house hadn't been used in a while but they were very apologetic & accommodating. When we asked if the fire pits were available to us and found out they were not, she had a fire pit and firewood delivered that night! So now, that's a new amenity! We loved the house layout & how comfortable the beds were. We also took advantage of the beach wagon, chairs & toys. The kids room is huge which was so nice! I do recommend bringing your own cleaning things like dish soap, shampoo trash bags, laundry detergent, & paper towels TP as there definitely wasn't enough for our full house for the length of our stay & amount of meals we prepared at the house. That being said, we definitely loved having all the pots/pans and appliances we needed to prepare our Thanksgiving meal & bake a cake for our bday boy! We sure hope to return and will gladly stay here again!

Timothy, December 2024

LOVED IT! A great little hideaway tucked away in Fort Morgan but plenty close enough to the hustle and bustle of Gulf Shores if that's what you're looking for. The beach is low key, dog friendly, and not crowded and the local area has enough restaurants to satisfy and a Dollar General nearby for any extra needs. The house was fabulous, so clean, and the beds are super comfy. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals. Martha is super responsive and very friendly! The only drawback is the proximity to the beach. It's a super quick drive but really too far to walk with all your beach stuff in tow, and there are no water hoses or shower areas at the beach to rinse off before getting back into a vehicle to return to the house. At least there is a shower and hose outside the house....just be prepared to get your vehicle full of sand in the meantime. The house has plenty of beach items to share with guests like chairs, umbrellas, floats, toys and even towels!

Angela, September 2023

There is so much to say about our trip to Fort Morgan and our stay in the Just Breathe Seahorse Cottage at The Rookery III. The rental was very clean, nicely decorated, and located very close to the pool. Everything we needed and more was provided. There were plenty of beach chairs and floats available which is a wonderful convenience. Martha is an excellent host, always quick to respond and offering recommendations for local activities and places to eat. The little touches, like delicious desserts awaiting our arrival at check-in, did not go unnoticed. Fort Morgan is the perfect place to vacation. The Seahorse Cottage is located on a stretch of road away from the hustle and bustle of Gulf Shores. The beaches are beautiful and not too crowded. We really enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this rental.
