Fort Morgan, Alabama, is a great year-round destination for a relaxing family vacation! It’s tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby Mobile and neighboring main resort areas of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Yet, these areas are only a short drive or ferry ride away.

With its coastal location and breezes off Mobile Bay, year-round average daily temperatures are perfect for outdoor activities. The area is home to a protected wildlife refuge that features gorgeous sand dunes, coastal marshes, and beaches—not to mention the amazing fishing! And don’t forget about the incredible bird life!

For educational experiences, the area has a rich history full of adventure. From historical military forts built during the Civil War to serene natural parks home to rare plant species found nowhere else, there is always something new to discover.

It is home to a big masonry fort that offers a tour and educational opportunities. This is a prime location for a hands-on history lesson. This military memorial commemorates important battles during the Civil War. Be sure to spend some time exploring the on-site museum, which has interesting exhibits about the area's history, as well as the site tours.

Explore the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail. This unique trail is home to many bird species that migrate to the area, making it a great place for bird watching and photography. The trail markers are on Highway 180.

Take a dolphin cruise throughout Bon Secour Bay – During the summer months, dolphins are highly active in the area, providing excellent opportunities for sightings.

Rent a boat and go tubing, boating, or fishing – If you want to go fishing further offshore, consider chartering a boat out of Orange Beach and fishing for snapper, mahi, and grouper. Get all the information you need, from permits to charters, here.

Visit the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge and Interpretive Center. There are over 7,000 acres and four designated hiking trails to explore here, as well as an interpretive center. The Pine Beach Trail is one of my family’s favorite hikes, as it ends in a secluded stretch of beach. While there, stop by the interpretive center to learn about the flora and fauna native to the area, including alligators and other interesting creatures.

Go kayaking—There are countless areas to launch your kayak and explore local waterways. One of our favorite places to put in is Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. Be sure to pick up a trail map when you visit the center so you know where to go.

Enjoy a round of golf – Kiva Dunes is ranked one of the top public golf courses in Alabama per Golf Digest and Golf Advisor. There are numerous courses within a few miles.

Take the Mobile Bay Ferry to Dauphin Island. This ferry runs daily from early morning to afternoon. It’s a beautiful ride across Mobile Bay and provides excellent views of Fort Morgan. The Dauphin Island ferry dock is located conveniently close to wonderful attractions like Fort Gaines and the Estuary.

Visit Fort Gaines—While you are on Dauphin Island, visit this historic fort, which played a significant role during the Civil War. The grounds, several buildings, and cannons are open for self-guided tours.

Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Estuarian – This is a great educational place. With over 19 miles of trails, you will learn about the coastal habitats and wildlife that call this area home. You can also visit their on-site sea turtle rehabilitation center and research library. For a more profound education experience, book a marine educator-led aquarium tour with your kids.

Karaoke and Dinner at Tacky Jacks – Tacky Jack’s, located next to Fort Morgan Marina, is fun for family-friendly entertainment and waterfront dining—a local favorite for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with live karaoke on Thursday and Saturday nights.

Visit the Gulf State Park – This large state park in Gulf Shores offers trails, a beach, a fishing pier, and more! You can read more about my experience on the Back Country Trail here. The beach here is one of the best beaches in Alabama. Be sure to stop by the lodge for a drink while you’re there – the sunset views from this hotel are gorgeous.

Visit Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve—Located in Fairhope, Weeks Bay offers plenty of opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing. A walk through the reserve’s wetlands and marsh along the well-maintained paths is highly recommended.

Visit the Coastal Art Center of Orange Beach—This beautiful art museum displays area artists and is a great stop. Check the class schedule for art classes and events in the glass-blowing and clay studios.

Visit Mobile, Alabama. This historic city has a long history dating back to the Civil War era. There are plenty of things to do in Mobile during your visit, including visiting some great museums and restaurants. If you want to see the third of the area’s historic forts, visit Colonial Fort Conde, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Colorful spacious cottages. Friendly neighbors and lots of areas to run, play, ride bikes, and grill to your heart's content. Adult beverages are allowed on Fort Morgan Beach, not like Gulf Shores or Orange Beach.
We are a crazy community for golf carts; we love them, take them down the trail right to the beach or to the local restaurant and shops. We cannot drive them on the main road through! If you are here for special occasions, you will see a golf cart parade. Those of us who live here call each other family; we love the Rookery 3 and we love people who enjoy it with us.

Renting golf carts is very common here .
A lot of people like to bike ride, bring your own, or Fort Morgan Beach Rentals has them and they also offer chairs, tents, kayaks etc.
It is about a 10 min walk to the beach, even though it’s directly across the street, it’s just the way the access points are to get there. There is a public car park and you can also park along Cortez Street . Bring your skate-boards or bring your scooters. The streets by the beach are nice and smooth. Gulf State Park is popular for a bike ride as well (bike rental is available there). Rent a slingshot and drive Fort Morgan road and enjoy the peaceful drive and the smell of the beach air. Drive to the Fort at the end of the peninsula. Rent some kayaks and cruise around the bay that backs up to Rookery for the day; maybe even see the sunset while on kayaks. It’s quite breathtaking!

I’m available as needed. I live in the Rookery 3.

I will provide you with beach towels, chairs, and toys.

What guests say

We had a great time at the Rookery 3. Everything was as it said it would be. This place is definitely a perfect spot for a family with young kids or a place for our family of 3 adult girls. They loved the bunk beds and ability to be together. This place could easily allow for two families to share. We enjoyed going to the beach and visiting many different restaurants locally and in gulf shores. Our family favorites: Sassy Bass Grill, Tacky Jacks, The Catch in Gulf Shores, Fine Dining at Jesse’s on the Bay, Gulf Shores has lots of Ice cream places we tried Matt’s. The creamery was great just down the road. Try fishing from the Pier in Fort Morgan by the Ferry. Lots of Blue Crabs so try net them if you can. Bait shops in Gulf Shores have the nets or Walmart in Gulf Shores Loved having “Pool Days” at Rookery. This set up was great for our family than the busyness of a condo set up. Definitely would be back when visiting next time

William Benard, August 2026

The house was clean, beds were comfy, kitchen was well stocked. Host had good communication. HVAC worked well even in the extreme heat. The kids really enjoyed the pool. A couple of issues we ran into weren’t the fault of the rental just would like to mention - the pool had to be closed for a day or two due to a bunch of rain we got and they couldn’t get the chemicals right. The other disappointment was we rented a golf cart expecting to be able to use it on a bunch of the trails and to get to the beach, but that was not the case. The sand trails were very loose sand and the golf carts had street tires on them so they wouldn’t work on the trails and the main road in front of the property is 55 mph which made the golf cart pretty useless for our family. Other than that we enjoyed our stay.

David, June 2026

Martha’s place was wonderfully decorated, lots of extras for beach, kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms. Everything we needed and more! Umbrella, cooler, beach chairs, towels and toys, kitchen spices, living room blankets, extra linens, toiletries, hair dryer. Comfy beds. Only slight negatives were other houses very close and Rookery 3 pool small and not as nice as Rookery 1&2 which offers no access to R3. We did see pics of pool on listing and only found R1/2 pool by accident, listing was accurate so no fault of owner. Beach was not walkable for us but easy drive and nice area at access.

Michelle, April 2026

We finished our summer off with a family vacation. The home was close to the beach and set up with everything we needed. Martha left us with plenty of details, and was very organized. From check in, to ideas of things to do/where to eat, plus all of the amenities from the house. You can literally just pack your clothes and personal items, and then shop for groceries once you get there. The home is fully stocked on anything else you may need, and then some! We are very grateful for our host and the home owners for sharing their beautiful home with us. We made so many memories and loved being close to the beach, yet also having our own private oasis where is was calm and very relaxing!

Tosha, August 2025

Oh my gosh this was an amazing place to stay!! Martha was so helpful. The house so comfortable and beautiful. It was great for our 9 people. The location is great. It was very quiet and super easy to get thw beach. Some helpful info for others - The house has everything you need. Air fryer, 2 coffee maker options, large electric griddle, crockpot, lots of kitchen gear, mini cooler, lots beach towels, beach wagon, lots of sand toys, lots of boogie boards, 2 nice beach chairs, and like 5 smaller ones, 2 or 3 umbrellas, beach bag, etc. My child loved playing out back in the sand and playing with the frogs. We tore up one boogie board so we bought a new one. The golf cart was so cute and very handy for going to the beach and pool. We did get the golf cart stuck on the golf cart trails. I did not have trouble though. Went down the trail several times, just went fast in the sandy areas and off to the side a little. You will want to bring extra tp, paper towels, and laundry detergent

Andrea, June 2025

We can’t thank you enough! Our family had an amazing time! The place was spotless and beautifully decorated. The kitchen had everything you could need which made cooking a breeze. The location was perfect quiet and safe and we felt at ease with our kids being there. Martha was incredibly kind and responsive. She offered great recommendations and made sure we felt at home. We would 100% stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Thank you again!
