Fort Morgan, Alabama, is a great year-round destination for a relaxing family vacation! It’s tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby Mobile and neighboring main resort areas of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Yet, these areas are only a short drive or ferry ride away.

With its coastal location and breezes off Mobile Bay, year-round average daily temperatures are perfect for outdoor activities. The area is home to a protected wildlife refuge that features gorgeous sand dunes, coastal marshes, and beaches—not to mention the amazing fishing! And don’t forget about the incredible bird life!

For educational experiences, the area has a rich history full of adventure. From historical military forts built during the Civil War to serene natural parks home to rare plant species found nowhere else, there is always something new to discover.

It is home to a big masonry fort that offers a tour and educational opportunities. This is a prime location for a hands-on history lesson. This military memorial commemorates important battles during the Civil War. Be sure to spend some time exploring the on-site museum, which has interesting exhibits about the area's history, as well as the site tours.

Explore the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail. This unique trail is home to many bird species that migrate to the area, making it a great place for bird watching and photography. The trail markers are on Highway 180.

Take a dolphin cruise throughout Bon Secour Bay – During the summer months, dolphins are highly active in the area, providing excellent opportunities for sightings.

Rent a boat and go tubing, boating, or fishing – If you want to go fishing further offshore, consider chartering a boat out of Orange Beach and fishing for snapper, mahi, and grouper. Get all the information you need, from permits to charters, here.

Visit the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge and Interpretive Center. There are over 7,000 acres and four designated hiking trails to explore here, as well as an interpretive center. The Pine Beach Trail is one of my family’s favorite hikes, as it ends in a secluded stretch of beach. While there, stop by the interpretive center to learn about the flora and fauna native to the area, including alligators and other interesting creatures.

Go kayaking—There are countless areas to launch your kayak and explore local waterways. One of our favorite places to put in is Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. Be sure to pick up a trail map when you visit the center so you know where to go.

Enjoy a round of golf – Kiva Dunes is ranked one of the top public golf courses in Alabama per Golf Digest and Golf Advisor. There are numerous courses within a few miles.

Take the Mobile Bay Ferry to Dauphin Island. This ferry runs daily from early morning to afternoon. It’s a beautiful ride across Mobile Bay and provides excellent views of Fort Morgan. The Dauphin Island ferry dock is located conveniently close to wonderful attractions like Fort Gaines and the Estuary.

Visit Fort Gaines—While you are on Dauphin Island, visit this historic fort, which played a significant role during the Civil War. The grounds, several buildings, and cannons are open for self-guided tours.

Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Estuarian – This is a great educational place. With over 19 miles of trails, you will learn about the coastal habitats and wildlife that call this area home. You can also visit their on-site sea turtle rehabilitation center and research library. For a more profound education experience, book a marine educator-led aquarium tour with your kids.

Karaoke and Dinner at Tacky Jacks – Tacky Jack’s, located next to Fort Morgan Marina, is fun for family-friendly entertainment and waterfront dining—a local favorite for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with live karaoke on Thursday and Saturday nights.

Visit the Gulf State Park – This large state park in Gulf Shores offers trails, a beach, a fishing pier, and more! You can read more about my experience on the Back Country Trail here. The beach here is one of the best beaches in Alabama. Be sure to stop by the lodge for a drink while you’re there – the sunset views from this hotel are gorgeous.

Visit Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve—Located in Fairhope, Weeks Bay offers plenty of opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing. A walk through the reserve’s wetlands and marsh along the well-maintained paths is highly recommended.

Visit the Coastal Art Center of Orange Beach—This beautiful art museum displays area artists and is a great stop. Check the class schedule for art classes and events in the glass-blowing and clay studios.

Visit Mobile, Alabama. This historic city has a long history dating back to the Civil War era. There are plenty of things to do in Mobile during your visit, including visiting some great museums and restaurants. If you want to see the third of the area’s historic forts, visit Colonial Fort Conde, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Colorful spacious cottages. Friendly neighbors and lots of areas to run, play, ride bikes, and grill to your heart's content. Adult beverages are allowed on Fort Morgan Beach, not like Gulf Shores or Orange Beach.
We are a crazy community for golf carts; we love them, take them down the trail right to the beach or to the local restaurant and shops. We cannot drive them on the main road through! If you are here for special occasions, you will see a golf cart parade. Those of us who live here call each other family; we love the Rookery 3 and we love people who enjoy it with us.

Renting golf carts is very common here .
A lot of people like to bike ride, bring your own, or Fort Morgan Beach Rentals has them and they also offer chairs, tents, kayaks etc.
It is about a 10 min walk to the beach, even though it’s directly across the street, it’s just the way the access points are to get there. There is a public car park and you can also park along Cortez Street . Bring your skate-boards or bring your scooters. The streets by the beach are nice and smooth. Gulf State Park is popular for a bike ride as well (bike rental is available there). Rent a slingshot and drive Fort Morgan road and enjoy the peaceful drive and the smell of the beach air. Drive to the Fort at the end of the peninsula. Rent some kayaks and cruise around the bay that backs up to Rookery for the day; maybe even see the sunset while on kayaks. It’s quite breathtaking!

I’m available as needed. I live in the Rookery 3.

I will provide you with beach towels, chairs, and toys.

What guests say

We had an absolutely wonderful stay! This was the perfect home base for our family vacation. The location struck an ideal balance—close enough to all the attractions, restaurants, and tourist activities we wanted to enjoy, while still being far enough away to relax and unwind at the end of the day. The loft beds were a huge hit with the kids and quickly became one of their favorite parts of the trip. The home was comfortable, well-maintained, and had everything we needed for a great stay. The host was fantastic to work with and went above and beyond when we needed assistance with a postal service issue during our trip. The communication and willingness to help were greatly appreciated. We enjoyed our stay so much that we’re already talking about making this an annual family vacation destination—and hopefully squeezing in a few adults-only getaways here as well!

We throughly enjoyed the little beach house in paradise. Perfect location to have a less crowded beach experience. The beach house was super cute! This was our first time staying so close to the beach and the amount of sand we trekked in and I’m assuming the regular dusting while no one is staying there is normal. We plan to book again if given the opportunity! Thank you for being an awesome host.

The cottage was absolutely perfect! This was an extremely last minute booking due to our original place canceling on us right before we were to check in. This home was beautiful and a short walk to Fort Morgan Beach! The neighborhood was cute and quiet. I would definitely recommend place to anyone and everyone. The host was super friendly and welcoming and made sure to check in on us throughout our stay! There is two really nice clean pools short distance from this home. It was so beautiful and very clean!

I love The Rookery III! This is the second year that we have stayed in the neighborhood, and my kids love the pools. The house was beautiful and clean. Beds were very comfortable. Host sent local recommendations and other tips! The sweet treat left for us was an added bonus!

Heather, July 2026

6025 Rookery III is a cute pink house, open floor plan, larger rooms had all the amenities to get started in our 7 day vacation. Pool is 2 houses away, beach access was 4-5 minute drive (maybe 7 blocks), tucked away in Fort Morgan but the new Dollar General is close. We liked the slower pace, less commercialized location.
