Why We Love It:
Only a quick jaunt from Gulf Shores attractions, this cottage is perfect for those who want the accessibility of town but with the reprieve that only Fort Morgan Peninsula can offer, as it uniquely sits along Mobile Bay and the endless white sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. There are several local shops and restaurants close by, including the newly opened and already top location, Jessie's On the Bay! If you want more space to stretch out, easy access to the beach but less congestion of downtown, then this is the place for you!
Where You'll Sleep
The master bedroom has a comfy queen bed decorated beautifully with an en-suite bathroom with tub and shower.
The 2nd bedroom has a beachy/unique queen-over-queen bunk. Teenagers love this room and the private space. Also great size for those long legs.
The 3rd bedroom is wonderfully welcoming with two full-sized beds and an attached bathroom.

Last but not least, the screened-in porch is everyone’s favorite! Listen to nature on the back porch and the crashing waves out the front porch. Truly, the best of both worlds. This cottage is at the end of a private drive, nestled right up against the nature preserve. Perfect for morning coffee or an afternoon sunset.
Cottage Community:
The Rookery III cottage community has low streetlights and no large buildings impeding your views of the black sky with bright stars! There are 2 pools, one with a zero-depth entry. Get away from the craziness that is the congested area of Gulf Shores and find peace on Fort Morgan.
Dogs Welcome:
Dogs are welcome. Pet fee is for one dog. If you bring two please add an additional $125This will be requested. $60 will be requested for parking.
The 2 pools onsite are open year-round but for those winter guests that want even more fitness activities, the Bodenheim rec center in Gulf Shores offers $10 a day pass to heated indoor lap pool, racquetball, track, basketball courts, & group classes.
We are on a peninsula surrounded by water, so please expect insects around Gulf Shores and the property. You are coming to experience the area and stay in one of the beautiful cottages; we cannot control anything beyond our service and inside the home.
Two pools available. You can walk the beautiful natural habitat we live in, which is just amazing! Ride your bike, go for a jog. Chase each other with water guns. Do whatever your heart desires. Just have fun! Trails for golf carts or just walk them.

Fort Morgan, Alabama is a great year-round destination for a relaxing family vacation! It’s tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby Mobile and neighboring main resort areas of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. Yet these areas are only a short drive or ferry ride away.
With its coastal location combined with breezes off Mobile Bay, year-round average daily temperatures here are perfect for outdoor activities. The area is home to a protected wildlife refuge that features gorgeous sand dunes, coastal marshes, and beaches – not to mention the amazing fishing! And don’t forget about incredible bird-life!
For educational experiences, the area has a rich history full of adventure. From historical military forts built during the Civil War to serene natural parks that are home to rare plant species found nowhere else in the world, there is always something new to discover.
Suggestions for great adventures nearby:
Visit The Fort Morgan Historical Site-
This is an excellent area to explore, photograph, tour, and learn! Completed in 1834, Fort Morgan was active during four wars — the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and World Wars I and II. The fort is most famous for its role in the Civil War Battle of Mobile Bay.
**The fort is only minutes away from the cottage.
Explore the Alabama Coastal Birding Trail –
This unique trail is home to many bird species that migrate to the area, making it a great place for bird watching and photography. You’ll find the trail markers on Highway 180.
Take a dolphin cruise throughout Bon Secour Bay –
During the summer months, dolphins are extremely active in the area providing great opportunities for sightings.
Rent a boat and go tubing, boating or fishing –
If you want to go fishing further offshore, consider chartering a boat out of Orange Beach or Fort Morgan and fish for snapper, mahi, and/or grouper.
Visit the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge and Interpretive Center –
There are over 7000 acres and four designated hiking trails to explore here as well as an interpretive center. The Pine Beach Trail is one of my family’s favorite hikes as it ends in a secluded stretch of beach. While there, stop by the interpretive center to learn about the flora & fauna native to the area, including alligators and other interesting creatures.
**The cottage is tucked along the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge; talk about beauty and privacy!
Go kayaking –
There are countless areas to launch your kayak and explore local waterways. One of our favorite areas to put in at at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. Be sure to pick up a trail map when you visit the center so you know where to go.
Enjoy a round of golf –
Kiva Dunes is ranked one of the top public golf courses in Alabama per Golf Digest and Golf Advisor.
Take the Mobile Bay Ferry to Dauphin Island –
This ferry runs daily from early morning to afternoon. It’s a beautiful ride across Mobile Bay and provides great views of Fort Morgan. The Dauphin Island ferry dock is located conveniently close to wonderful attractions like Fort Gaines and the Sea Lab Estuarium.
Visit Fort Gaines –
While you are on Dauphin Island, visit this historic fort which paid a significant role during the Civil war. It’s open for self-guided tours of the grounds, several buildings, and the cannons.
Visit Dauphin Island Sea Lab –
This is a great place for an educational experience. With over 19 miles of trails, you will learn about the coastal habitats and wildlife that call this area home. You can also visit their on-site sea turtle rehabilitation center and research library. For a deeper education experience, book a marine educator-led aquarium tour with your kids.
Karaoke and Dinner at Tacky Jacks –
Tacky Jack’s, located next to Fort Morgan Marina, is a fun place for family-friendly entertainment and waterfront dining. A local favorite for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with live karaoke on Thursday and Saturday nights.
Visit the Gulf State Park –
This large state park in Gulf Shores offers trails, a beach, a fishing pier, and more! The beach here is one of the best beaches in Alabama. Be sure to stop by the lodge for a drink while you’re there – the sunset views from this hotel are absolutely gorgeous.
Visit Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve –
Located in Fairhope, Weeks Bay has plenty of opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing. A walk through the reserve’s wetlands and marsh along the well-maintained paths is highly recommended.
Visit the Coastal Art Center of Orange Beach –
A beautiful art museum displaying area artists is a great stop is not far away from the beach. Check the class schedule for art classes, as well events in the glass blowing and clay studios.
Visit Mobile Alabama –
This historic city is full of history dating back to the Civil War era. There are plenty of things to do in Mobile during your visit including visiting some great museums and restaurants. If you want to see the third of the area’s historic forts, visit Colonial Fort Conde which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Colorful spacious cottages. Friendly neighbors and lots of areas to run, play, grill to your heart's content, and ride bikes. Adult beverages are allowed on Fort Morgan Beach, not like Gulf Shores or Orange Beach.
We are a crazy community for golf carts; we love them, take them down the trail right to the beach or to the local restaurant and shops. We cannot drive them on the main road through! If you are here for special occasions, you will see a golf cart parade. Those of us who live here call each other family; we love the Rookery 3 and we love people who enjoy it with us.
Renting golf carts is very common here .
A lot of people like to bike ride, bring your own, or Fort Morgan Beach Rentals has them and they also offer chairs, tents, kayaks etc.
It is about a 10 min walk to the beach, even though it’s directly across the street, it’s just the way the access points are to get there. There is a public car park and you can also park along Cortez Street . Bring your skate-boards or bring your scooters. The streets by the beach are nice and smooth. Gulf State Park is popular for a bike ride as well (bike rental is available there). Rent a slingshot and drive Fort Morgan road and enjoy the peaceful drive and the smell of the beach air. Drive to the Fort at the end of the peninsula. Rent some kayaks and cruise around the bay that backs up to Rookery for the day; maybe even see the sunset while on kayaks. It’s quite breathtaking!

What guests say
My family and I had a great stay! The house was very clean and comfortable. Even though it was a duplex, it was still very quiet. There is a small pool just around the corner that my family loved walking to for quick dips. The beach is not really walkable from the duplex, but it is close, easy to get to, and more laid back than the better know beaches in the area. The location, out in Fort Morgan, was great. It was not far from anything but felt remote and relaxing. Martha, the host, was amazing! Tons of information and very responsive.
Such a beautiful and accommodating place to stay, especially with a family of 5 and for privacy and rest! Plenty of beds, cute decorations, spacious, private.
Absolutely wonderful host!Their hospitality was exceptional! The place was beautiful and clean !We enjoyed everything about our stay !
Great place to stay away from the crowds. House has necessities. Scrreen porch facing the nature preserve was amazing place to drink my morning cofee. Something to note, Martha, hosts more than one home in Rookery 3 for various owners. I found some things listed in the description to be general and not specific to the house we actually rented. Martha also provides a wealth of information about the area. I would stay again if it is available.
We had stayed at the original Rookery for years as my sister owns a unit there. Martha made our stay at The Rookery III feel just as “at home” as it would have been staying at my sister’s unit. Affordable and peaceful. We will definitely be renting from her again.🩷
Beautiful Duplex close to the beach. The community was quiet, and peaceful. Dog and Kid friendly, had a great time in Fort Morgan!
